The coins are held in a durable plastic card that features a picturesque image and a brief description of the site and the coin, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity on the back of the card. The America the Beautiful Quarters Program features designs depicting national parks and other national sites. Each year five new national site designs are depicted on the reverse (tails) of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The United States Mint is issuing these quarters in the order in which the honored sites were established as national sites. Each coin in the series features a common obverse of the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, which has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model. The Great Basin National Park quarter was the third to be released in 2013 and the 18th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The reverse image depicts the beauty and unique qualities of a single Bristlecone Pine tree and shows the rocky glacial moraines where the trees grow. These trees grow at higher elevation in the park and are some of the world’s oldest. The park contains numerous Bristlecone Pine groves with trees greater than 4,000 years in age. Inscriptions are GREAT BASIN, NEVADA, 2013 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The design was developed in consultation with representatives of Great Basin National Park.
