Bavaria is located in the southeast of Germany and is the largest state by area with almost 20% of the total land area of Germany. Bavaria is Germany's second most populous state with almost 12.5 million people, and its capital is Munich. Many large companies are headquartered in Bavaria, such as BMW, Siemens, Audi, Allianz, MAN, and Adidas. Its GDP per capita is over $48,000, making it 7th in the world if it were an independent country. The federal states series consists of a total of 16 different €2 coins, each one bearing a unique symbol or building specific to the respective state. The series began in 2006 and a new coin is minted each year, in order of the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament representing the federal states). The reverse of the coin shows Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Europe's most popular with 1.3 million visitors per year. Built by the very shy King Ludwig II in 1869, Neuschweinstein is also known as "the castle of the fairy-tale king" as it ironically was built in order for the king to withdraw from public life. In the outer ring are the European stars as well as the year of issue, 2012. In the lower half of the outer ring is the country of issue, “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” or Federal Republic of Germany.
