Administratively the historic provinces ceased to exist in 1634 when the country, then a part of Sweden, was divided into counties. The obverse depicts fishing nets as a reminder of how important fishing is to the inhabitants of Åland islands. Country name in Finnish and Swedish on the ring Fishing nets were woven at home as winter work, often from hand-spun single-stranded linen yarn. Early on, the nets were three meters high, and they became increasingly larger particularly as the stone anchor was replaced by the storm-proof iron anchor. The reverse features the historical region´s coat of arms and the face value, 5 EURO.
