I have seen many ads which claim 12 mm. knife blade. That is 1/2" long, but the cutting part of the blade is only about 6 mm . long (1/4") I also have seen claims that the blade is carbide, or stainless steel, or alloy German steel. It seems that all the blades, and drive housing are made in China and probably at the same factory, but the specifications are not consistent. A carbide blade would be very brittle at the fine tip and would probably snap quickly. I believe all the blades are actually made from high quality alloy steel which will hold its edge, but not be susceptible to breaking. This knife cartridge will cut Balsa-1/16" (1.6 mm), Balsa-3/32" (2.4 mm), Basswood-1/32" (0.8 mm), Basswood-1/16" (1.6 mm), Chipboard (1.5 mm), Heavy Chipboard(2.0mm), Tooling Leather and more. Remember, the Cricut machine will not cut thick materials in one pass, it may take up to 20 passes to cut through thicker material The steep and sharp knife blade is made for cuts with moderate detail, allowing you to precisely cut images or details larger than 0.75", for best results, interior cuts should be no smaller than 3/4" and width of cuts should not be smaller than the diameter of a pencil. Make sure all cuts are at least 0.25" away from the edge of the wood (the blade will probably be damaged if it crosses the edge of the wood).
