Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Nevil Shute On The Beach 1957 1st edition 1sdt printing UK William Heinemann Ltd hardback This sale is for a first edition first printing of the UK edition of Nevil Shute’s On The Beach. “On the Beach is an apocalyptic (or post-apocalyptic) novel published in 1957, written by British author Nevil Shute after he emigrated to Australia. The novel details the experiences of a mixed group of people in Melbourne as they await the arrival of deadly radiation spreading towards them from the Northern Hemisphere, following a nuclear war some years previous. As the radiation approaches, each person deals with impending death differently.” Historian David McCullough, writing for The New York Times, called On the Beach "the most haunting evocation we have of a world dying of radiation after an atomic war." The San Francisco Chronicle called it "the most shocking fiction I have read in years. What is shocking about it is both the idea and the sheer imaginative brilliance with which Mr. Shute brings it off." Daily Telegraph called it "Shute's most considerable achievement", and The Times stated that it is "the most evocative novel on the aftermath of a nuclear war." The Guardian commented that "fictions such as On the Beach played an important role in raising awareness about the threat of nuclear war. We stared into the abyss and then stepped back from the brink." The Los Angeles Times described the novel as "timely and ironic... an indelibly sad ending that leaves you tearful and disturbed", and The Economist called it "still incredibly moving after nearly half a century." In 1959 an American film version was released by United Artists starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins. Produced and directed by Stanley Kramer.” This book is in VG++ condition, (with the exception of a owners name neatly written on the FFE and some aging to the edge of the page block). No writing, stickers, stamps, rips, tears, dogears, stains, odors, mold, mildew, fingerprints, smudges, or water stains,. Hinges and spine are firm and tight. Smoke free home. Everything will be mailed using re-used boxes. No handling charge. Buyer pays actual shipping costs in the continental US. But the post office won’t let this go media rate. sigh. I have a full time job and, at most, I only get to the post office once a week. So other sellers will probably be faster shippers than me. But your package will be very well packed and will arrive undamaged (unless the post office releases the gorilla on it). International bidders will pay actual shipping costs which are shockingly, staggeringly, prohibitively expensive.
