Besides the Hall of Fame trio, other Rookie Cards include Willie McGee, Frank Viola Gary Gaetti and Howard Johnson.And then there’s Ron Kittle, making his only appearance in one of the “Big 3” brand’s base releases. There was a time when this was a tremendously hot card. More importantly, it carried tremendous influence that’s easily overlooked today. The Rookie Card chase is a fairly recent development in the larger history of the hobby and, as strange as it may seem today, this is one of the cards that helped establish the craze.The Super Star Special subset is synonymous with 1980s Fleer Baseball cards. Coming towards the end of the set, the vast majority of these pair up players, often from different teams. Some take a two-card approach, working like a puzzle.For #641, Joel Youngblood, a card of one player on two different teams. The card highlights his unusual day in August where he played for the Mets in an afternoon game, was traded to Montreal and suited up for the Expos that night in Philadelphia. Youngblood got hits in both games.1983 Fleer Baseball has a clean design with notably bright colors on the front. The framed layout is simple but effective. Images are a lot of portrait-style shots, either posed or with tight cropping, but some action shots do exist.Card backs include a noticeable change. In addition to a full grid of career stats and the usual vitals, there’s also a second player photo. It’s in black and white and it’s not large, but it’s something. The result is a little extra personality. The stakes would be raised further in a few years when Score came along with full-color backs then again with Upper Deck using the back for full-on action shots. But this was 1983 and it was something different.Where space permits, some trivia tidbits are also included.Although traditional 1983 Fleer Baseball wax boxes say they have 36 packs, it’s actually 38. The bonus is declared with a note on the box top, “Mr. Retailers…2 FREE PACKS INSIDE!!”For the second year in a row, stickers replaced gum as the add-in for packs. Following a lawsuit, there was a ruling that only Topps could use gum as a baseball card selling point. This meant that newcomers Fleer and Donruss had to change it up.The 1983 Fleer Baseball Team Logo Stickers land one per wax pack and two per cello.Each team has two basic stickers, one with a team cap and another with the logo. That said, there are some subtle variations with things like the position of the background color gradient and how the ‘Peel’ instructions is positioned.
