This is an original press photo. Gary L. Thomas, a Posse Comitatus member, will ignore a child custody hearing Friday in Marathon County Circuit court just as he has ignored at least three previous hearings. Thomas, 31, said he believed the custody proceedings were an example of the system's effort to get him. In an interview, Thomas said he intended to use whatever force was necessary, including firearms, to resist any efforts to give up his daughter. Thomas, who was divorced in 1977, took his daughter at gunpoint and has kept her since November 3, 1979. He and his second wife, Althea, have resisted efforts to give up the girl, sometimes using firearms. Thomas believes in the Posse interpretation of a state statue, which he said allows the use of force to resist an illegal action.
