METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON D C POLICE CHIEF’S TRADITIONALPRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION BADGES HISTORY. Before detailing this item hereis a brief history on inaugural badges. These badges are official policeshields issued for duty during a brief period around the time of thepresidential inauguration. The practice of issuing them began in 1937 whenmajor police departments across the country were requested to send a fewofficers experienced in preventing the types of crime prevalent when largecrowds gather. These officers were given special D.C. Metropolitan Policebadges commemorating their participation in the inauguration. The practice ofinviting outside policemen ended with the 1957 inauguration. Only one style ofbadge, the "traditional" was issued from 1937-1977 (with theexception of 1945, when no badge was issued, although many years later thepolice chief authorized 100 sterling silver badges for the1945inaugural). In1981, the D.C. Metropolitan Police began the now standard practice of issuingtwo badges. The "traditional" badge was distributed only by the Chiefof Police while a different "street" badge was made available forpurchase by police officers. The 1981 inauguration also marked the introductionof special badges issued by six other police agencies. This practice grew quitepopular and each inauguration since has witnessed additional police departmentsissuing their own shields. ThisReagan badge is 3" tall x 2 ¼” wide in heavy brass with the reverse side namingthe maker Blackington
