Description: 1979 Topps Nolan Ryan #115 RARE Blank Back Baseball Card SGC Authentic. Has anyone ever seen or heard of sports card trading company not being able to grade and authenticate a baseball card because it is too rare? Well, if you have not heard of it ever happening, I think I experienced it first hand with this rare baseball card I have put up on eBay. Thirty or so years ago, I got a 1979 Topps Nolan Ryan #115 card with a label on the card that it was "SUPER RARE" as you can see in one of the pictures that I have put on this listing. At the time, I had no idea what I got because I was just a young collector interested in collecting baseball cards, particularly stars and future Hall of Famers like Nolan Ryan. In 2022, I started taking an interest in what kind of grades some of my older and rarer cards would receive. So, on one of my submissions to the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) company known now as Collector's Universe, I submitted this rare card as my second submission along with my 1957 Hank Aaron #20 baseball card as my fourth and fifth pictures to this listing show. Weeks after I submitted my 1979 Nolan Ryan blank-back card to PSA, I received a no grade from PSA while my 1957 Hank Aaron received a PSA rating of 1.5. As a result of receiving a no grade from PSA, I contacted PSA for rationale as to why I did not receive a grade on the rare card. PSA provided the following response in an e-mail, dated March 21, 2022, to me: "After looking into the order, I want you to know that your frustration does not go unnoticed. I'm aware of why you feel the way you do, as I can imagine you were not anticipating the card being returned ungraded. Please know that we grade cards according to our standards which are different than those of pre-graders. The graders render an opinion based on the characteristics and condition of the card in front of them Typically graders do not leave notes as to why cards do or do not receive results. However, our team did take the time to place one with your order. Your Blank back card was unprocessed due to PSA not processing the blank back version for this set. We apologize for the inconvenience, but our graders do not make these decisions lightly. Each card that is looked at by our team must have a checklist from a reputable source, and the blank back must be a known error with the factory. With a N9 result you are not charged the processing fees." As a note, I have attached the e-mail response from PSA to me indicating that the 1979 Nolan Ryan card with the blank back is not "a known error with the factory." I do not know how others might interpret the response from PSA, but I take it to mean my 1979 Nolan Ryan blank-back is so rare (possibly having only a population or pop count of 1) that even PSA or Topps does not know about it and could not, therefore, grade this rare card. Not one to be discouraged, I sent this rare 1979 blank-back Nolan Ryan card and my 1979 Nolan Ryan card to the Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC) to see if it would grade the card. From SGC, I received a grade back on the card from SGC with a grade of 'A' for Authentic under Certificate Number 8277026. Because of the rareness of this item and because of how good Nolan Ryan is, I am placing this card on eBay for a very high price with a "Buy it now" option and a reasonable offer option to the "Buy it now" price. Also, because of the perceived rarity of the item, I have incorporated additional protection for the SGC cardholder by putting the cardholder itself in what is called a Slabmag, which protects the SGC slab from damage caused by dropping it on the ground and from ultraviolet (UV) rays. For those who might need evidence of how good Nolan Ryan is, think of him in these terms: He stands alone among baseball legends for being in a 5,000 member club. There are two hitters (Ty Cobb and Pete Rose) in the 4,000 hit-or-more club and while Steve Carlton, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, and Nolan Ryan occupy the 4,000+ strike-out club. Of the members in the 4,000+ strike-out club, only Nolan Ryan is in the 5,000+ club of any kind. In addition to just being alone in the 5,000+ strike-out club, Nolan Ryan has quite a few impressive records: Most strike-outs in a lifetime (5,714), most strike-outs in a season (383), most no-hitters (7) in a life-time, and most seasons played (tied at 27). I also think Nolan Ryan is tied with Randy Johnson for the most seasons with 300-or-more strike-outs at 6 seasons with 300-or-more strike-outs. Nolan Ryan holds a lot of highs. Ty Cobb once had the record for batting average and number of hits (4,191), which was divided when Pete Rose took part of his accolades when he managed to record 4,256 lifetime hits as a batter. Babe Ruth saw both his single season home record of 60 home runs and lifetime number of home runs (714) taken. When it comes to arguments being made as to who is the best baseball player of all time, I would say Nolan Ryan deserves significant consideration. Even in the era of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), who can match his statistics? None appear to be in the same league as Nolan Ryan. You can give Cy Young props for number of wins at 511, but how does he stack up when you look at the hitters of today? Nolan Ryan stacks up. Given Nolan Ryan's statistics, I think it will take many generations of players to collectively match his accolades, or it will take a lifetime of dedication of an athlete to stack up against Nolan Ryan. Due to rarity of this item, particularly in light of the fact of how difficult it is to even obtain a grade on this card, and the greatness of Nolan Ryan as a pitcher (a GOAT), this item is listed as a high fixed price amount with a "Buy-It-Now" option and reasonable offers.
