Titanium is noted for itsextremely high strength coupled withvery low weight. While not as light asaluminum, its strength is considerablygreater. Unlike magnesium, titaniumdoes not readily ignite.Of course, any funny car is neces-sarily unique since each is a handmadecreation of its builder. Beneath theirfiberglass shells the Mickey ThompsonMustang and the Pinto are somewhatsimilar, but each is an entity with itsown characteristics.Where the frame of the Pinto is oftitanium, the Mustang has a frame ofmild steel tubing but of constructionsimilar to that of the lighter weightmachine.Ford Boss 429 engines power bothof the Thompson Ford funnies. Boreand stroke are 4.36 x 3.59 wherein arehoused M/T forged aluminum pistonsand rods, the latter are forged alumi-num on 6.800 centers.The crankshaft is a forged steel unitwith the main bearing caps beingdouble vertically bolted.
