A complete collection annotated in detail. John Gay was an English poet and dramatist, mostly known for his ballad opera The Beggar's Opera. In his letters, his character is revealed: a gentle, sincere, and honest man. This book comprises a great example of the witty, sprightly, informal letter which the eighteenth century succeeded in elevating to art form.Loosely inserted, the publisher's request for a review by Mr. Seymour-Smith, a well known British poet, biographer, astrologer, and literary critic. He is mostly known for writing the biographies of Robert Graves, Rudyard Kipling, and Thomas Hardy, as well as producing numerous critical studies. With unclipped dustwrapper. CONDITION In the publisher's original navy cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to spine. Externally, lovely with minor shelfwear only. Loosely inserted, the publisher's receipt for a review copy, dated 11.11.66, and a request for a review to Mr. Seymour-Smith dated March 29th 1967. Dustwrapper is unclipped and excellent with only minor shelfwear. Spine is slightly sunned with the odd spot. Internally, firmly bound. Minor faint spotting to endpapers, otherwise pages are bright and clean.
