1963 Gibson EB-0 Vintage Short Scale SG Bass Cherry w/ Mudbucker, Case

Description: Up for sale, a 1963 Gibson EB-0 in perfect working order, 100% original save for a refret and carved bone nut, and complete with a hardshell case. Introduced in 1959 in response to declining sales of the EB-1, the EB-0 originally came with a Les Paul Junior style body, quickly superseded by the SG style body (like the example seen here) in 1961. Lightweight at 7lbs 7oz with solid mahogany construction, this bass delivers pure, fat low-end thump courtesy of the famous "Mudbucker" pickup. The rich growl of the EB-0 sits perfectly in a mix, deftly below the midrange frequencies of guitar and keys. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 45-100 roundwound strings, this bass plays smoothly with easy-playing action and solid intonation. The one-piece mahogany neck has a round, substantial C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and rolled fretboard edges, filling the palm comfortably and measuring .865" deep at the 1st fret and .970" at the 12th. The very dark and tight-grained Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been refretted with factory spec medium jumbo fretwire that has good meat and shows only light wear on the crowns of frets 1-7, primarily beneath the A and D strings. The bass plays cleanly up the effortlessly navigable 30 1/2" scale length, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a carved piece of bone. The headstock sports the original clover button tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch well with clean nickel plating. The treble-side headstock wing has been reglued at the seam, and some previous lifting of the original headstock veneer has also been mitigated, with the veneer now sitting flush with the mahogany. On the body, all of the original electronics work as they should with untouched solder joints and CentraLab pots which date to the 8th week of 1963. Hardware comprises the original nickel two-point bridge and string cover, and original plastic parts include the multi-ply pickguard, mudbucker cover, and pair of black reflector cap knobs. The carved wooden finger rest is intact too. The original nitro lacquer gloss Cherry finish presents as a more muted shade of walnut on top with heavy horizontal lacquer checking, while the back has a much more ruddy, unfaded appearance. There is one slender split on the bass side of the neck heel, glued flush and structurally sound. Cosmetic wear otherwise includes light buckle rash at the treble-side waist on the back and various minor marks consistent with honest use. The nitro gloss on the neck exhibits lacquer checking and some small, shallow marks on the profile length, all worn quite smooth from years of use. A modern Gibson USA black tolex hardshell case is included.
