Description: 1959 CINCINNATI REDS on DVD! For late 1950's Reds and Crosley Field fans, this one's a must! The 1959 Reds promotional film, "The Cincinnati Reds" shows the '59 team and contains fabulous shots of the old ballpark from almost every angle - scenes from the outfield looking in, from behind home plate looking out, from the press box, shots from Finley and Western Avenues looking at the outside of the park, many views of the old scoreboard, and even an inside view from underneath the stands - all in beautiful COLOR! The 30-minute DVD is not really a highlight film, but a colorful presentation of the Reds organization in 1959. A title at the beginning of the film states, "This film is about the Reds of today (1959) and how the Cincinnati Baseball Club strives to give you and your family the finest, most wholesome entertainment." The film opens at the Reds' minor league camp, with Farm Director Phil Seghi and instructors teaching the youngsters. The top Reds farm club in '59 was the Seattle Raniers, and you'll see several minor leaguers wearing Reds and Raniers "hand-me-downs" with even a Savannah uniform or two! One youngster is shown in what is obviously an old Kluszewski shirt! Soon, the film moves on to Plant Field, spring training home of the big club. Beginning here and throughout the rest of the film, you'll see the Reds players of 1959: Catchers Don Pavletich, Dutch Dotterer, Ed Bailey, and Jesse Gonder, outfielders Gus Bell, Jerry Lynch, Frank Robinson, Pete Whisenant, Bob Thurman and Frank Thomas, infielders Johnny Temple, Roy McMillan and Eddie Kasko, pitchers Bob Purkey, Tom Acker, Hal Jeffcoat, Joe Nuxhall, Brooks Lawrence, Don Newcombe and young lefty Jimmy O'Toole. Some of the more obscure players shown are Buddy Gilbert, Chuck Coles, Johnny Powers, Charlie Rabe, Bob Mabe, Whammy Douglas, and Bob Henrich. Even though he is not mentioned by name, the player probably shown most throughout the film is young star Vada Pinson. As the film continuously shows Pinson it points out that talented youngsters do make it to the top with the big league Reds. Nice closeups show Gus Bell, Frank Robinson, Pinson and Dutch Dotterer in the batting cage. Because he was replaced halfway thru the season with Fred Hutchinson, manager Mayo Smith is not mentioned, however you'll see coaches Clyde King, Reggie O'Tero and Wally Moses in the film. Spring training scenes culminate with the Reds hosting Al Lopez' White Sox in the grapefruit league opener, then it's home to Cincinnati for Opening Day at Crosley Field. Meanwhile ticket-hungry fans are shown standing in line at the gates just off Western Avenue for seats in the "Sun Deck". Shots of Reds officials Powell Crosley, Jr. and Gabe Paul plus the Reds in their brand new 1959 uniforms highlight the traditional opening day festivities. After Happy Chandler throws out the first ball to open the new season vs the Pittsburgh Pirates, the film emphasizes other Reds special promotions such as Clinic Day, Camera Night, and amateur baseball night. On Hall Of Fame Night, all of the living members of the 1940 World Champs return to Crosley Field. Pre-game ceremonies honor Ernie Lombardi, and nice closeup shots show several of the greats of the 1940 club, including Bucky Walters, Johnny Vander Meer, Frank McCormick and Paul Derringer. More unidentified 1959 game action is shown throughout the second half of the film, including a Don Newcombe home run with McMillan on base, and a Vada Pinson inside the park home run.
