The Type 2 design was intended only for Proof coins, but some retired Proof dies were used for business strikes in 1958 and 1959. The rigors of striking on rough planchets, at higher speeds, wore out the Proof dies quickly. Some examples, like this piece, still show a very glossy surface texture. Scarcer in gem grades.
