Description: 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle RC Rookie PSA 5 ICONIC Vivid Color Looks Nicer! Invest Now! #14 on the Fanatic's Iconic 100 Countdown goes to Mickey Mantle's true rookie card, the '51 Bowman. The ‘51 Bowman Mantle rookie continues to look undervalued relative to the ‘52 Topps. The card’s reverse offers a riveting narrative that takes collectors back to the year when Mantle first entered the league. This is what collecting is all about—in this case, owning a piece of history at the start of one of the most magical careers in sports history. Many in the industry believe the gap will close in the years ahead as the Bowman rookie earns its due and both cards continue to appreciate. If Mantle had not suffered a near career-ending knee injury at the start of his career in 1951 and if he had not suffered from terrible back pain throughout most of his career, he probably would be the current all-time home run leader. The ‘51 injury required him to be removed from the field on a stretcher with a torn ACL, which he played with throughout most of his career since there was no surgery to fix it then. He was never the same. And yet he was one of the best ball players ever. That is how good Mickey Mantle was. He only played 96 games in 1951 and played five more seasons where he played far fewer games than the season offered due to injuries. If he had played those seasons in full and extended his career, it is unlikely anyone would ever be able to touch his records. Widely considered the most gifted baseball player ever, Mantle played in 12 World Series and still holds the record for most home runs (18) in the World Series. He won an incredible seven titles and three league MVP awards. He ran to first base in 3.1 seconds, the fastest speed ever recorded. When he retired, he had the highest stealing percentage in MLB history. That speed helped him in the outfield, too. Balls rarely got past Mantle or over his head. He is still regarded as the greatest switch hitter ever.
