Silk. New York. One man campaigner for the idea that we do not have to depend on Japan for our silk, John Ousta breeds his own silkworms, produced the valued fabric in the basement of his home at 6104 Riverdale Avenue, the Bronx. His campaign, started in 1935, is getting more attention now because of the virtual elimination of silk imported from Japan. This series of photographs shows the start of the silk raising process. First is shown a pile of silkworm eggs, contrasted for size with a paper clip. Ousta has a million eggs bred for next year's crop. Next is shown a mass of hatched worms feeding on mulberry leaves in Ousta's back yard. They're kept in trays from birth until ready to spin cocoons. The last photograph shows a bundle of dried oak leaves amid which the worms roost to spin their cocoons.Photo measures 11.25 x 7inches. Photo is dated 7-31-1941.
