Description: 1929 AMELIA EARHART IN COCKPIT HATCH LOCKHEED VEGA AIRPLANE 8X10 PHOTO AVIATION AMELIA EARHART IN HER LOCKHEED "VEGA" AIRPLANE PHOTO. TAKEN IN LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA. CIRCA 1929. This would be a fantastic addition to your collection! It is a reproduction 8 x 10 inch real photo. It is crisp and clear and perfect focus. You will love it!Amelia Earhart's Vega was one of 131 Lockheed Vegas manufactured. It was an aesthetically pleasing aircraft with a spruce veneer monocoque fuselage and a spruce cantilever wing. The first Vega flew in 1927 and, in an era of biplanes, featured an advanced monoplane configuration in which the wing was completely braced internally, and the fuselage was of monocoque (shell) construction. It was the first airplane built by Lockheed, and it established a tradition of Lockheed excellence in design that has continued to this day. The Vega was noteworthy in reintroducing the monocoque fuselage shape, which had first appeared on the Deperdussin racing airplane of 1913. This shape, wherein the fuselage is essentially a shell, maximizes both the load-carrying ability of the aircraft and its useful internal space. It subsequently became a standard design practice for transport aircraft. The Vega's wooden monocoque structure is a technological link on the road to the de Havilland Mosquito bomber of World War II, an eminently successful wooden aircraft having a monocoque fuselage design. Amelia Earhart sold her Vega to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in June 1933. The aircraft was displayed there until it was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution on September 8, 1966. It is displayed in the Museum's Pioneers of Flight gallery. I will ship in a photo mailer for safety.
