Description: This is the 1923 Liber Brunensis, the yearbook of Brown University. It features photos of graduates as well as photos of member of fraternities and other organizations. Three notable graduates are pictured: Harry Shulman (page 182 as a graduate and page 304 as a member of the debating society), who would become dean and dean emeritus of Yale Law School; Justin Andrews (page 139), Director of Center for Disease Control and parasitologist; and Joseph Chester Allen (page 139), a Black attorney who with his wife Elizabeth Fletcher Allen, J.D., fought for civil rights. Wikipedia: " Harry A. Shulman (May 14, 1903 – March 20, 1955) was a professor at Yale Law School from 1930 to 1954, the Dean of Yale Law School from 1954–1955, and a prominent labor arbitrator. He earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and clerked for Justice Brandeis of the United States Supreme Court. Shulman was "one of the most influential people in the history of American Labor arbitration." He was Phi Beta Kappa at Brown University. Wikipedia: Justin Meredith Andrews (August 28, 1902 – June 29, 1967) was an American public health administrator and parasitologist specialising in malaria. He published over 100 articles and was considered an expert on malaria. Andrews attended the School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins and received a DSc from Hopkins. Throughout his time at Johns Hopkins, Andrews's research focused on malaria and a range of other parasitic, tropical diseasesn malaria. From Ball State Civil Rights: "Joseph Chester Allen, J.D. and Elizabeth Fletcher Allen, J.D., were African American attorneys in South Bend, Indiana who fought for civil rights in both their personal and professional lives. J. Chester Allen was born in 1900 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. After graduating with a law degree from Boston College, he moved to South Bend in 1929. Elizabeth Fletcher was born in Chicago in 1905, and married J. Chester Allen in 1928. The couple were noteworthy trailblazers in both civil rights and opportunities for women. The two created the Allen & Allen Law firm, and they were one of the first husband and wife law partners in the area. Elizabeth Fletcher Allen was the first female attorney in St. Joseph County and the state of Indiana.J. Chester Allen paved the way for African American representation in South Bend as the first African American to serve on the City Council and the school board. He was elected as president of the St. Joseph County Bar Association and to the Indiana state legislature, the first African American in both of those positions Elizabeth Fletcher Allen was a member of the many civic and African American community organizations, including the South Bend chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Black Business and Professional Women’s Association. While the two had many significant contributions to the community, they are perhaps best known for their civil rights work in South Bend, specifically fighting to desegregate the Engman Natatorium." The yearbook is in fair condition. The only writing in the book is signature of owner "Lloyd C. Gallup, '23". The hinges just beginning to crack. There are no loose or missing pages. It measures 10.50 x 7.75" and has a brown and red cover with gold lettering. The book has 352 pages, plus 30 pages of advertisements. .
