From Wikipedia: The Man Higher Up: A Story of the Fight Which Is Life and the Force Which Is Love is a novel by the American writer Henry Russell Miller set in 19th century Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The novel tells the Horatio Alger story of Bob, an Irish-Catholic tenement waif who becomes a mill hand, a ward heeler, then mayor of Pittsburgh, and finally governor of Pennsylvania. From the dust jacket description: “The story of a tenement waif who rose by his won ingenuity to the office of mayor of his native city. His experiences while ‘climbing,’—in the successive positions of newsboy, mill-hand, ward-heeler, party boss,—make a most interesting example of the possibilities of human nature to rise above circumstances. He starts in life equipped with faith in brute force only, but through his acquaintance with a loyal young Irish-woman and a political satellite, he develops a spiritual strength that forces the brute element into the background. But the best part of the story is where the real woman of his heart comes on the scene and plays her part in the making of the man.” DESCRIPTION: 402 pages 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches First printing, hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in good condition with a fair dustjacket. The greenish cloth cover has suffered rather severe water damage so the finish is not good. I rebound the book and replaced the endpapers with new acid free paper. The interior is actually very clean and without marks or tears. The paper is toned with age. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dustjacket is mostly complete, but is torn and chipped at the head and foot. It is age toned and has had several tears stabilized on the back with acid-free thermoplastic tissue.
