Description: Old Times on the Upper Mississippi: The Recollections of a Steamboat Pilot From 1854-1863. By George Byron Merrick and published in Cleveland by the Arthur H. Clark Company. 1909, 323 pp, 6.5x10'', hardcover binding. In fair condition. Covers and spine have age-related toning and wear that has caused some discoloration, bending, and slight tearing along the edges. Pages have age-related toning and foxing. Ex-library from the personal collection of Robert Garrett. Some pencil inscriptions at the beginning of the volume from a previous owner. Hinges are worn, and while pages remain attached, the support is not even throughout. Illustrations have some toning, but are otherwise in good condition. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. George Byron Merrick was an American steamboat pilot, newspaperman, and veteran of the American Civil War in the Wisconsin Infantry. While spending his youth working in various printing offices, Merrick was able to improve his writing to eventually allow him to write about his experiences on his steamboat. A great collector's item for anyone interested in steamboats. Any issues with hinges or binding due to age or wear could provide an excellent opportunity for restoration or rebinding, if desired.
