Description: Up for auction is this antique photograph on 12" x 10" backing board. The photo measures 8 1/4" x 6". The backing has some edge tears. The photo is nice. It reads, "BOILER MOVING OUTFIT OF LEO ANSTISO LAKE ARTHUR New Mexico. (PHOTO BY KING O7). I am not sure of the spelling of the last name of Leo. Shows a Dalmatian running next to the Boiler with men on the boiler and the J.K. Hearte hardware store behind. On the back of the card it reads, John Haven & his team". Is it a fire fighter Boiler with the Dalmatian? Not sure. Lake Arthur is located near the southern border of Chaves County about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Pecos River. New Mexico State Road 2 passes through the town, leading north 9 miles (14 km) to Hagerman and south 11 miles (18 km) to Artesia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.54 square miles (1.4 km2), all of it land. "Horse-drawn boilers were used for a variety of purposes, including powering engines, fire engines and agricultural machines. Wagon boilers These boilers were shaped like covered horse-drawn wagons and were used to provide low-pressure steam to early engines. They were made from riveted wrought iron plates and surrounded by brick to support the boiler and maximize the heating area.. Farm engines Small, portable steam engines that were hauled by horses to provide power to agricultural machines like threshing machines, sawmills, and corn shellers.. Fire engines Horse-drawn steam fire engines were used from around 1860 to 1920. The horses were carefully selected and their stalls were located next to or behind the fire engines. When an alarm sounded, the horses would walk out and position themselves so the harness could be quickly applied. SEE PHOTOS. ASK QUESTIONS.
