Description: Shipping | POLICIES AND INFORMATION 18thC Antique NEW JERSEY ADMIRALTY & SUPREME COURT Double Wax Seal / COIN SILVER An incredibly historic artifact, dating to the 1770's to 1780's. The seal appears to be a watch fob, or possibly a pendant to be worn around the neck. It's a "spinner" type fob, with center medallion that can be spun from one side to the other, depending on which seal was to be used. Of course the hand-cut inscriptions are carved in reverse, so they would read correctly when pressed in wax. Side one: The matrix cut with an anchor surrounded by thirteen stars. Border reads: NEW JERSEY ADMIRALTY SEAL (in reverse) Side two: The matrix cut with a prison gate and two pair of handcuffs. Border reads: SEAL OF THE SUPREME COURT (in reverse) Could this item have once belonged to FRANCIS HOPKINSON, the designer of the American flag? Hopkinson was a judge of the New Jersey Admiralty Court, and also a judge of the United States District Court? Or, could this piece have belonged to Joseph Bloomfield, a Major in the Revolutionary War, who then served as New Jersey State Attorney General and chief justice of the New Jersey Admiralty Court. Regardless, this is certainly a fascinating piece of United States history, and certainly worthy of further research. I just do not have the time or expertise to devote to such a project. I have included an image from a 2009 Christie's auction where a very similar seal (from the New York Admiralty Court) sold for nearly $10,000. Measurements: 2" tall and 1 1/4" wide. Center medallion measures 1 1/16" in diameter. Please excuse the glare and reflections in my photos. I have included several images of the piece just as it appears, and have also included two images (second and third from bottom) that have been reversed in photoshop, so the engraving is easily readable. Sold just as-found, unpolished, with original warm patina. In excellent condition, with no dents, dings, bends, breaks, or repairs. Guaranteed to be antique circa late-1700's, and not a reproduction.
