Description: Carte de La Louisiane et Des Pays Voisins Dediee a M. Rouille Secretairr 'd Etat ayant le Departement de la Marine… 1750… Sur de Nouvelle Observations on a corrigee les Lacs, et leurs Enviorns 1755 By: Jacques Nicolas Bellin Date: 1755 (dated) Paris Dimensions: 19.5 x 24 inches (49.5 x 61 cm) This is an authentic antique map showing of North America from the eastern seaboard to the Rocky Mountains. The map was originally published by Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1750 for Charlevoix's Histoire et description générale de la Nouvelle France. This example came 5 years later with the added title “Sur de Nouvelle Observations on a corrigee les Lacs, et leurs Enviorns,” which notes new observations and corrections on the Great Lakes region. This fantastic large format map is based on Delisle's map of 1718 with additions from notes compiled by the Jesuit priest, explorer and historian, Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix. Bellin produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps, particularly reflecting continuing discoveries and political events in the Americas. This map extends its coverage further south to include all of Florida and includes fairly accurate delineations plethora of Indian villages, army forts, trading posts, missions, rivers, portages throughout the map. While Jacques Bellin’s maps were regarded as some of the most accurate works of the 18th century, a number of topographical fallacies found their way onto the page in into history. A notable mistake displayed in this map is the massive mountain range that runs the length of present day Michigan. Bellin can also be noted for his insertion of three fictional islands in Lake Superior, including I. Philippeaux, I. Pontchartrain, and I. St. Anne (not shown in this map). Condition: Map is in A condition with original coloring, full margins, a strong impression, and a healthy watermark that can be seen clearly when held to the light. Inventory #18825 1932 S.
