Description: 18th Century Antique English Pewter Plate, Townsend & Compton, c. 1784 - 1802. This fine early pewter plate has a single reeded rim with a deep dish. This pewter plate is from the end of the 18th to the early part of the 19th Century with the Townsend and Compton mark. The plate has a set of well struck marks, including the full set of hallmarks. There is a crown and rose mark that reads, "MADE IN" above and "LONDON" below. Next to it there is the makers mark that reads, "TOWNSEND + COMPTON". The back of this plate has hand hammered marks showing with the clear touch marks and overall impressive craftsmanship. This mark is listed in "OLD PEWTER, IT'S MAKERS AND MARKS" by Cotterell, #4800, page 324. This Townsend and Compton mark is attributed to 1784 to 1802. The Townsend group of pewterers is probably the most represented of all of the known pewter exporters to North America.
