Description: I have here for sale a book entitled FRIDTJOF NANSEN'S "FARTHEST NORTH" Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Fram" 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Month's Sleigh Journey by Dr Nansen and Lieut. Johansen with an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup Captain of the "Fram" About One Hundred and Twenty Full Page and Numerous Text Illustrations, Sixteen Coloured Plates in Facsimile from Dr Nansen's own Sketches Etched Portrait Photogravures and Maps VOL II published by Archibald Constable and Company, London, in 1897. First edition. This book recounts the record breaking expedition undertaken by the author and his team to the North Pole. Nansen, a Norwegian scientist, explorer, athlete, diplomat and writer became internationally recognised after his three year expedition to the North Pole in a specially built ship that reached record latitudes. Unlike previous expeditions that had failed Nansen approached from a different angle and worked with the currents rather than against them. This volume includes 8 full-page colour plates, 65 full-page b/w plates and numerous in-text illustrations. There are also 2 colour fold-out maps at the back of the book, one showing the route of the "Fram", and Nansen's and Johansen's Sledge Journey; and the other being a Preliminary Sketch Map of Franz Josef Land. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and a gilt illustration on the front board. Marks on the boards with wear to the corners. Gilt lettering on the spine with rippling to the cloth and fraying to the top and bottom. Stamp on the title page and piece of the prelim torn off. Light foxing to endpapers and some pages. All pages are firm and the book is in very good condition. xiii, 671 pages. 25 x 17.5 cm.We have over 2000 items in our Ebay shop on a range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if anything else takes your fancy.Postage will be by Air Mail outside of UK.
