DICTIONARY IS COMPLETE, BUT SET IS INCOMPLETE - MISSING VOLUMES IX & X. 2nd Edition. Continuous pagination: 7046 p + 30 p total. Uniform leather binding measuring 12 x 9”, 4tos. In poor condition. As is. All spines are presumed lacking & covered with repair tape & cloth; headbands remain intact. Original leather boards moderately scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Front board detached of Vol. V, binding remains intact via cloth spine only. Gilt deco on front board dulled, but still attractive. All edges gilt (top dulled mostly). White stickers with black hand-writing found on all front board’s bottom edges (except Vol. VIII - sticker residue exhibited instead). Silver or white duct tape found in all front and rear gutters. Gutters split at title pages & last pages of text-block (not including end-pages), cording exposed. Toning throughout text-blocks, mostly at edges of leaves. The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia is one of the largest encyclopedic dictionaries of the English language. It was compared favorably with the Oxford English Dictionary, and frequently consulted for more factual information than would normally be the case for a dictionary. In 1895 a 10-volume edition was published, with the first eight volumes containing the dictionary proper, and the last two containing a biographical dictionary and a world atlas. After Whitney's death in 1894, supplementary volumes were published under Smith's supervision, including The Century Cyclopedia of Names (1894) and The Century Atlas (1897). LACKING: --v.9.
