Description: Fresh from the estate of a retired Swiss-trained watchmaker, a genuine American-Made Elgin 18S Grade 44 Pocket Watch Movement. When this movement was produced in 1895, this 15 jewel model would have been a high-grade movement. While 15 Jewels is not much today - when 17 or 25 jewels is standard, in 1895, it was normal to see 1 or 3 jewels in "regular" grade watches. Thus a 15-jewel was a premium movement. The watchmaker's notes indicate he purchased this watch in Nov of 2013 for $500 cash with a 14K gold case which he subsequently scrapped (very sad). The return from the smelter on the case was $742.29. The watch has a good, free-swinging balance and looks to be in rather nice condition, but we are unable to test it further.
