Description: Fox-Hound, Forest, and Prairieby Captain Pennell Elmhirst(1892) This is the antique book, Foxhound, Forest and Prairie, written by Captain Pennell Elmhirst and published in 1892 by George Routledge and Sons, Ltd., London/Glasgow. It is illustrated by J. Sturgess and J. Marshman including four hand-colored plates and many black/white illustrations. Captain Pennell Elmhirst, AKA "Brooksby", writes in introduction, "To those who, like myself, look to active, outdoor sport as the chief means of lighening and brightening life - or even as constituting its best injoymnet - I offer these reminiscences..." The book is an account of the author's experiences around the world, including the Malay Peninsula, India, and America, with in-depth hunting descriptions. Chapters include My Earliest Shikar, The Prince of Wales at Madras 1875 with the Madras Hounds, Leicestershire Season 1882-1883, Jackal Hunting on the Neilgherries 1876, The South Midlands 1885-1886, Grass Countries 1886-1887, The Wild Stag on Exmoor, Roebuck Shooting on the Banks of the Rhine, Western Cattle Lands, Hunting a Christmas Dinner, The New Forest in Spring, etc. The book is in very good condition. The red fabric cover is attractive with a beautiful gilt and black horse and hound design. The book shows little fading and only light wear at the spine and corners. The marble endpapers are in excellent condition. The inner and outer hinges are intact. The binding is very good. Although there is a split between an advertising page and the pre-title page, the binding is otherwise solid and tight. The pages are excellent with only light yellowing, no foxing, no tears, no dog-ears and no handwriting. This book has 584 numbered pages. It is 9 inches by 6 1/4 inches.
