Morgan while he was in his early thirties. Later in his career he became the Chief Engraver of the US Mint. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty, as she was modeled by Miss Anna Willess Williams, a school teacher from Philadelphia. Liberty is shown wearing a coronet with the inscription "Liberty" with a Phrygian cap on her head. The reverse heraldic eagle was not readily accepted by the public due to a more diminutive build. Morgans were sometimes referred to as "Buzzard Dollars" because of the reverse image.
