Description: Book Description: John Savage, The Life and Public Services of Andrew Johnson, Seventeenth President of the United States. Including His State Papers, Speeches, and Addresses. New York: Derby and Miller, 1866. 408 pages, 130-page appendix, 19-page index along with publisher’s ads. Approximately 5 ¾” x 8 ½”. Several illustrations including a steel engraving of Johnson as frontis. Gilt title on brown boards. Corners bumped. There is about a 3 ½” separation of cover along the spine. This is one of the few examples of this volume known where the original cover is still intact. Otherwise very good with decent binding and clean pages. Campaign biographies were the 19th-century equivalent of political commercials today. Written by someone who was a supporter of the politician that was the subject, these biographies focused on the candidate’s humble beginnings (no matter if he was actually born rich), his honesty, humility, charity, and religious nature (without specifying a particular denomination). This is item number 547 in William Miles’ bibliography of campaign biographies. Johnson, of course, whose presidency was marred by controversy and impeachment, never actually ran for President, but this biography was obviously intended to be the first salvo in a projected run. This is one of the few presidential hopeful items known for Johnson.
