Charles Knight's pictorial edition of the works of Shakespeare. Complete in eight volumes. The second edition, revised with later editions of Shakespeare’s biography – mixed set. All published in New York by George Routledge and Sons. The set consists of a Biography of Shakespeare, the Comedies in two volumes, the Tragedies on two volumes, the Histories in two volumes and the Doubtful Plays. With many beautiful illustrations throughout. In half brown calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Ten inches tall, raised bands, titles, and gilt decorated spine panels, an attractive set. Externally, gilt decorated with wear to the spines. Internally, firmly bound, bright with occasional spotting. Charles Knight (15 March 1791 March 1873) was an English publisher and author. The son of a bookseller and printer at Windsor, he was apprenticed to his father. On completion of his indentures he took up journalism and had an interest in several newspaper speculations, including the Windsor, Slough and Eton Express.
