Please see photos. Isabella Trotter, formerly Strange (1816-1878) was born in Madras, India (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu) to parents Sir Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange and Louisa Burroughs. She married Alexander Trotter, a wealthy stockbroker for Coutts Bank, on February 18, 1852 in Bryanston Square, St. Marylebone, Middlesex, England. Alexander married Isabella Strange after his first wife died, who had borne him six children. Isabella and Alexander had three children together: Isabella Lilias, Alexander Pelham, and Margaret Alice. This work is dedicated to Trotter's daughter, "I.L.T." - Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853-1928), who was, at the time of publication, about a month shy of six years old. Her mother writes, "My Dear Little Girl, I dedicate this little book to you; the letters it contains were meant to let you know how your father and I and your brother William fared in a rapid journey, during the autumn of last year, through part of Canada and the United States, and are here presented to you in another form more likely to ensure their preservation. You are not yet old enough fully to understand them, but the time will, I trust, come when it will give you great pleasure to read them... ...There is only one thing left to tell you, which is, that though I wrote and signed all the letters myself many parts are of your father's dictating. ...Believe me ever, Your affectionate Mother. June, 1859." Isabella Lilias Trotter (who went by Lilias as an adult) would grow up to be very close with her mother, who encouraged her artistic ambitions. John Ruskin was impressed with Lilian's drawings, and would eventually take her on as a student. Ultimately, she gave up art to devote herself fully to ministry, and traveled to Algeria for this purpose. Interesting travel and exploration through the United States and Canada. Presents well.
