Description: This listing is for a very early printing of "A Visit from St. Nicholas," dated 1857. This is an authentic pre-civil war printing, not a photocopy or facsimile. The poem has been custom matted and framed in a folding shadow box. Since the poem was originally printed on the front and back of the same page, it takes two publications to create this display, which measures 11 x 18 inches (opened). The printing is dated 1857 twice, above the poem and as a copyright footnote. Authorship is credited to Clement C. Moore. The two page spread features a very early depiction of Santa Claus climbing into a chimney by illustrator FOC Darley. It was Darley who created the images of Santa Claus that we have become familiar with today and no doubt inspired the artwork of Thomas Nast. The pages are clean with minimal foxing. This would make a wonderful heirloom or a special gift. If you collect the nineteenth books, it's the perfect finishing touch for for shelf or bookcase allowing you to actually see the poem in its vintage state.
