Description: 1856 or 1857 3c stamped envelope (appears to be either Scott #U9 or U10)(entire). The letter was sent by the Reverend Peyton Harrison to his son, the Reverend Dabney Carr Harrison at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA. (The city of origin is unclear.) The cover is undated; however, history shows that the younger Rev. Harrison was pastor to the students at that college from 1856-1857. It is in excellent, clean condition. It is a Very Fine item ready to enhance any collection of U.S. postal history, particularly of the Civil War era (which would later end the life of the letter's recipient). By way of background, Dabney Carr Harrison came from a prominent Virginia family. He was educated at Princeton College (NJ), graduating with the class of 1848. Afterwards, he received degrees from the University of Virginia School of Law and the Union Seminary (VA). He was a lawyer and then minister before the Civil War. Unfortunately, as a Southerner, he developed and manifested strongly held views in favor of slavery, which ultimately led him to join the Confederate Army. During the Civil War, he was a Captain of Company K, 56th Regiment of the Virginia Infantry. At the Battle of Fort Donelson, TN, he was wounded in the temple and mortally wounded in his right lung.Another Extremely Fine Piece of Postal History!
