These volumes are fourth edition copies with all the late improvements and embellished with portraits of every queen. Agnes Strickland was an English historical writer and poet and is most remembered for this extensive biographical work of the lives of the Queens of England that was first published in twelve volumes between 1840-1848. Each volume has a frontispiece and additional Vignette Title page. The first volume has thirteen plates and begins with Matilda of Flanders, Queen of William the Conqueror. The second volume has eight plates and begins with Isabella of Vallois, the Second Queen of Richard II and also writes of the lives of Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, the first two Queens of Henry VIII.The third volume has five plates and continues the lives of Henry VIII's wives, also including the life of Mary the First Queen Regnant of England and Ireland. The fourth volume has two plates of Elizabeth when she was a princess and when Queen. This entire volume considers the life of Queen Elizabeth the First. The fifth volume has three plates and details the lives of Anne of Denmark, Henrietta Maria and Catharine of Braganza. The sixth volume has one plate and details the life of Mary Beatrice of Modena, Queen-Consort of James II. The seventh volume details the life of Mary II and has two plates. The eight volume has one plate and outlines the life of Queen Anne. Collated, complete. CONDITION All volumes are in full calf leather binding. Externally, lovely with only a few light marks to the boards. Front hinge of volume i and vi are very slightly trained but remain firm. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages.
