Description: Hard to find August 1848 Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine (American Edition) is in good condition. Some edge wear to paper wrappers, nice clean text. See photo #3 for complete contents. 131 pages. Some highlights I find include: The Swiss born author and early adventurer G.F. Ruxton's notable true-life narrative of "Life in the [American] Far West" (Part 3 of 6). This highly valued estimate is his only contribution to the monthly. John Eagles on George Cleghorn's Ancient and Modern Art: Historical and Critical, a volume almost impossible to find today in a first book edition. The energetic novelist and journalist Frederick Hardman on the topic of Kaffirland (southeastern South Africa). Hardman also contributes an essay headed "Eighteen Hundred and Twelve: A Retrospective Review." And, not to be undone, Hardman also contributes a third item to this issue: "The Horse-dealer: A Tale of Denmark." The indomitable English novelist, essayist, and poet Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton's serial novel, Part 5 (of 17 monthly installments), The Caxtons: A Family Picture. Here first published, the novel would be issued in book form in 1849 and become a best seller. George Croly on "Modern Tourism" of the day. George Moir's "The Blue Dragoon; a Story of Circumstantial Evidence, from the Criminal Records of Holland." Edward Quillinan (12 pages) on the historical line of English poets: "Laurels and Laureates." This is an item of some interest. J. Palgrave Simpson's essay "Sketches of Paris." Another item of some interest detailing a now famous and controversial calendar year, most especially in France. Some author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 84.
