Description: 1848 $5 gold Liberty Half Eagle authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Extremely Fine, XF-45. This date had a respectable Mintage of almost 261,000, but is scarce now, more so than "mintmarked" half eagles of the same era, because of the attrition time causes. Indeed, survival is estimated at just 275, explaining the premium value. This 1848 date is right before California gold became readily available to the Mint, and so the bullion for these coins came from customers, imports from south of the border, the Appalachian placer mines, or by melting down foreign gold coins. This specimen has a strong gold-orange color with some lustre still in the fields, and with low wear typical of high XF. The mints produced larger quantities later in the century and up until the end of gold circulation coins, but these earlier Type 1 specimens can be hard to acquire.
