The vital statistics: one 1844-W (Lille) France 5 francs coin, KM# 749.13; silver, 0.900 fineness, 25.00 g (0.88 oz.) weight, actual silver weight 0.7234 troy oz., 37 mm (1.46 inches) diameter. Louis Philippe I (b. 6 October 1773 – d. 26 August 1850) was King of France from 1830 to 1848. As Duke of Chartres he distinguished himself commanding troops during French wars of European conquest that followed the Revolution of 1791. He then broke with the Republicans over their decision to execute King Louis XVI and he was forced to flee to Switzerland in 1793 after being suspected of involvement with a plot to restore the monarchy. His father was executed after accusations of treason against the Republic and Louis Philippe remained in exile for 21 years until the Restoration of the Monarchy of the Bourbon dynasty. He was proclaimed king in 1830. His reign was friendly toward the emerging class of bankers & business entrepreneurs at the forefront of the industrial revolution in France. He followed conservative political, fiscal and economic policies during the period 1840–48. He also promoted friendship with Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, most notably the French Conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as the French economy descended into crisis in 1847. He was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of popular revolutionary ferment that resulted in the creation of the Second Republic. He lived the rest of his life in exile in the United Kingdom.
