It has acorn finials, a knights head on the pommel and a Federal Eagle on the guard. It ha a nice carved grip and etched floral design on the blade. The US did not have a large standing army and early on they relied on State Militias. There were no standard regulations for military accessories so there is a wide variety of historical sword examples. Many of them had soft materials for grips so it is common to find these with chips, cracks or split grips. Again, there are many styles and designs. Overall, this sword is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The knight's head pommel and floral acorn guard are securely fastened to the hilt. They have a light wiggle. They have handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. The finish has turned a darker patina color. We are not sure what material the grip is made of, but it looks like stag. It has an ornate design carved into it. There are no chips, cracks or missing pieces. The coloring is white with dark areas in the carved areas. The blade has a slight bend approximately 12" towards the tip of the sword. The blade's fullers and sides have light scrapes and a couple small impact marks on the ricassos. There are a few light nicks and dings on the blade's cutting edge, almost not worth mentioning. It appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish in the white and has started to turn a darker gray patina color. The markings on both sides are an etched floral design that run about 2/3's the length of the sword starting at the ricasso. The right side blade has an etched Federal Eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" (one from many - a traditional motto of the US). There is also a Federal Eagle on both sides of the guard and the knights head on the pommel. The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The suspension ring mounts and rings are securely fastened to the body. The rings both rotate and swivel correctly. There are scattered impact marks and scrapes. One impact mark is preventing the sword from going all the way in. It sticks out approximately 1", it can probably be pushed in further but we didn't want to do any damage to the sword. A lot of the gold finish has worn off and the remaining coloring has turned a darker gold patina color. There are no visible manufacturer / serial number markings on the scabbard, but there are ornate floral designs etched into it - including the Federal Eagle. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your early Americana militaria collection, or a sword collection in general.
