1839 - OPIUM at Kara Hissar, Turkey; LUNE & EDEN Rivers; illuminated mss; drugs

Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE April 27, 1839 This is a paper which is over 180 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue has typical minor disbinding marks at the spine from coming from a bound volume, but is otherwise in excellent and attractive condition, printed on a good quality of paper. *** The lead article is on KARA HISSAR, in Turkey. It features an attractive wood engraved view of Afioum Kara Hissar, or the BLACK CASTLE OF OPIUM on the cover, followed by a text of about 100 lines which takes up the rest of the front, and 2/5ths of the next page. It says, in part: The town of Kara Hissar, in the Turkish province of Anadoli, in Asia Minor, is about 180 miles distant from Constantinople in a direct line; about 200 miles from Smyrna and the Aegean Sea; and 130 miles from the port of Adalia on the southern shores of the Mediterranean . . . . nearly all European manufactures and colonial produce which are distributed to the eastward and southward pass through Kara Hissar. This renders it a place of considerable importance, and stimulates the industry of the inhabitants; as the numerous caravans which pass through it bring produce and merchandise from distant parts, and the shops are accordingly well supplied. . . . there are a greater proportion of houses built of stone than in any other town in that part of Asia Minor. . . . The manufacture of firearms and sabres was flourishing, and there was a considerable trade in red leather. . . . The manufacture of carpets is chiefly carried on in the country between Kara Hissar and Smyrna . . . . From the large quantity of opium cultivated in the neighbourhood, it is generally called Afioum Kara Hissar. When Niebuhr visited it he ascertained that 180 mule-loads of opium were yearly prepared here. This would be equal to at least twenty tons, an extraordinary quantity to be produced in one spot of an article which is consumed in minute portions at a time. The situation of the town is striking. Lofty and naked rocks rise up on one side, and on the other is a range of high fruitful hills covered with vineyards. . . . it contains ten mosques; and the population is said to exceed 50,000. . . . Etc. *** This is followed by almost a page and a half on THE RIVERS LUNE AND EDEN, in England. *** In the middle of the issue are two and a half pages on the concluding section of a continuing article titled PROGRESS OF THE ART OF ILLUMINATING MANUSCRIPTS, which features two engravings based on illuminated manuscripts: Shooting at ButtsFrom Imaginacion de vraye Noblesse. and Public Washing-Grounds, 1582Harleian MS. 3469. The issue then closes with two and a half pages on a historical piece about Alexander the Great. ********************************************* Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history, often illustrated with fine woodcut engravings. 453 [gsp9306] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
