Description: Apalachicola, FL- Commercial Bank of Florida $3, Obsolete Banknote. Circa 1830's. The bank was approved in 1833. This $3 scarce note (scarce town and denomination) features lady liberty holding sheaf of wheat and a ship on each side of large sailing ships at the center. An American Indian down right frame, unclear whom the gentleman is on the left frame. The notes were engraved by Chas. Toppan & Co. Phila. This note is unsigned. J.C. Maclay served as President until Hugh Stephenson managed to buy control on June 4, 1837. Less than three weeks later, Stephenson made off with the bank's assets. He was found and arrested and the banknotes were recovered. Many banks during this period shared similar stories of misconduct and outright fraud. This is a very attractive note, spectacular detail in the engraving and with even color, light surface creasing throughout, no stains and very minor corner and edge wear. Will ship in archival sleeve for ongoing preservation. Photos are of the actual item being sold and they are to be considered part of the description.
