Description: 1828 U.S. Election -- Anti-Jackson circular mailed to Oneida Cnty NY A circular mailed October 17, 1827 from M.H.S. Lee to Reuben Tower of Waterville, NY.. The circular consists of a single sheet of paper measuring about 12.75" x 15.25", folded in half up the middle. The printing is on the right half of one side. The other side served as an envelope with a written note on the reverse. The fold on the center has separated slightly at the top as show. This item is in very nice condition and suitable for framing. M.H.S. Lee's handwriting is beautiful. Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) had become a wealthy Tennessee lawyer and rising young politician by 1812, when war broke out between the United States and Britain. His leadership in that conflict earned Jackson national fame as a military hero, and he would become America’s most influential – and polarizing – political figure during the 1820s and 1830s. After narrowly losing to John Quincy Adams in the contentious 1824 presidential election, Jackson returned four years later in 1828 to defeat Adams soundly and become the nation’s seventh president (1829-1837). Jackson's divisive personality resulted in the then-existing Republican party splitting into two factions: the pro-Jackson element, which became the Democratic party, and the National Republicans or Whigs. This circular describes the efforts of the then-nascent National Republicans to support the Adams administration and oppose Jackson. The circular contains a resolution declaring, among other things, that existing rights "would be rendered valueless by the triumph of a party, evincing so vehement a spirit of proscription, and headed by a chieftain of violent and impetuous character" as Jackson. The letter on the reverse of the blank side of the circular reads as follows: Reuben Tower Esq. Sir, Permit me to introduce to your notice this circular with the assurance that the administration ticket will succeed by a handsome majority. I have just returned from Baltimore & Philadelphia when I presume [?] the ticket will ultimately [?] succeed. I remain yours respectfully, M.H.S. Lee P.S. Being one of the Corresponding Committee I should like your views as to the Elections. We have not located information on the sender, M.H.S. Lee. However, the recipient, Reuben Tower (1787-1832), was a general merchant in Oneida County. His life was marked by an interest in all concerns of public welfare and the development of New York, especially in the projection and completion of the Chenango Canal. He was a member of the New York Legislature of 1828. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
