On or around September 1st, 1798, the Bank of Pennsylvania was robbed of $162,821 when a thief broke into the vault over a weekend. Pat Lyon, a reputable blacksmith, mechanic and inventor of the day, was arrested for the crime because he had made the locks for the vault doors. Although he wasn’t even in the city during the robbery, he was jailed for over three months until the actual culprit, Isaac Davis, confessed. Lyon not only wrote a best-selling book, “The Narrative of Patrick Lyon” about the incident, but he went on to sue the bank and police for false imprisonment - a landmark case in U. S. legal history. Lyon eventually won the case and was awarded twelve thousand dollars in damages. He commissioned this portrait showing him standing at his forge, wearing a leather apron, hard at work.
