Description: Legal document of George the III, the King in whose reign the United States revolution took place. An interesting document, labelled Essex Recovery. The form of the document is a parchment printed upon, with King George the Third at the upper left, and "George the Third by the Grace of God" across the top edge of the document. A headpiece illustrating the union of Scotland and England documents the top, and allegorical columns decorate the outer margins with justice holding her sword, a King and Queen's portrait, the crown, etc. An official stamp is at the upper left. At the bottom is the seal of the King, although damaged. The manuscript portion of the work describes a legal finding, by Judge James Mansfield (Knight of Westminster), which established that John Holdrich could take possession, using the Sheriff, of some disputed properties in Essex (presumably debt recovery, which is why the document is labelled Essex Recovery). There are some later notes in graphite on the main document, and an ink inscription on the outer panel has a mid-19th century update note.Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 81.5 x 71 cm. Parchment, with a legal form of George the Third printed on top; then the court (notary?) wrote in manuscript the description of the court's decision. A stamp applied under the portrait of George III, and a the seal of George the III assigned to the bottom of the document. Condition - See pictures. Folded, some toning to outer exposed parchment. Seal heavily cracked/melted, difficult to see the King's seal in it. Some odd creases along the edges. A little fading to the illustration along the right border. Some strikethroughs, updates/etc, in graphite. Pen note from the mid-19th century on the outer label noting an update.
