The Tatler, founded by Richard Steele (who used the nom de plume Isaac Bickerstaff) and first published in 1709 purported to give all the news and gossip from the coffee houses of London. 350 pages with index at rear. Book is square. Full calf leather boards worn and scuffed; corners bumped. Gilt lettering on spine rubbed to near obliteration. Library rules paper pasted to front cover and on front paste down; library sticker on base of spine. Leicester public library stamp on title page; Social Library notation in ink on fep. "Joseph Addison" (who was one of the main contributors to the magazine - along with Swift) written in pencil on title page. Internally, title page loose - otherwise binding and hinges firm. Brown stain on edges of first few pages; scattered foxing and staining throughout with one or two tears - please see all the photographs. Volume One only.
