Description: 17th Century English Walnut Double Dome Bureau Or Bookcase A rare antique English William & Mary period walnut double dome bureau or bookcase, sometimes called an escritoire, scrutoire or writing cabinet. This 17th century bureau is divided into two separate sections, typical of bureaus of this period. The upper bookcase section features a deeply moulded double dome, arched paneled doors and candle slides, with the interior bookshelves substituted in the 19th century for smaller storage compartments. The lower writing section has a fall front that opens to reveals a fitted interior on a four-drawer base and bun feet. A rare, fine and sophisticated piece of 17th century furniture with wonderful patina and color and in excellent overall condition. This compact and well-proportioned bureau makes a powerful statement without eating up tons of real estate. It was sourced from Charles Saunders Antiques and a lovely estate in Scarsdale, New York.
