Robert Watson, a Scottish minister and academic, known as a historian, started having a publishing success when he first published his volumes on Philip II of Spain in 1777. These volumes were praised by the likes of Horace Walpole, and went through several publications, reaching the seventh edition by 1812. Watson was working on the delineation of the reign of Philip the Third when he died, and the work was completed by William Thomson and was originally published in 1783. Thomson grew in popularity with this work. The History of the Reign of Philip the Second, this edition was published in 1794. CONDITION In a full calf binding. externally sound with some shelf wear and a touch of edge wear, as well as some rubbing and scuffing particularly to the spine. Volume one of 'Philip II' has suffered a loss of the spine label. With William Muir's bookplate to the front pastedown to each volume, as well as a minor previous owner's inscription to the front pastedown of volume one, undated. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves, and the odd minor spot tot he occasional leaf; otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean.
