1785 Germantown Ausbund Leibert and Billmeyer Printers 4th American Printing

Description: This is a nice one for anyone who collects historic Pennsylvania dutch books or who is interested in Anabaptist history. For your consideration, here is the 4th american printing in Germantown of the Ausbund 'Das Christliche Leider.' This one pupublished by Leibert & Billmeyer in 1785. If you do not know, the Ausbund is a collection of songs written by a group of Swiss Anabaptists who were imprisoned in a castle in Passau Germany from 1535–1540. The songs were collected and printed in 1564, likely in Cologne. Some of the authors of songs in the Ausbund include: Sebastian Franck: Wrote the first song, which teaches that Christians should sing in spirit and truthFelix Manz, Michael Sattler, and Hans Hut: Wrote songs 6, 7, and 8, respectivelyLeonhard Schiemer, Hans Schlaffer, George Blaurock, and Hans Leupold: Wrote songs as victims of the first great persecution of AnabaptistsHans Büchl: Wrote five songs as a participant in the Frankenthaler Colloquiums Other composers of songs in the Ausbund include: Michael Schneider, Hans Betz, Bernard Schneider, and Hans Garber. American editions of this sacred book:Christoph Saur the elder, a Brethren/Dunkard printer in Germantown, printed the first 2 editions in 1742 and 1756. His son, Christoph Saur the younger, printed a third edition in 1767. In the year 1777, the British destroyed his Germantown printing shop and six years later, Peter Leibert, a Brethren minister, and Michael Billmeyer, his Lutheran son-in-law, bought what was usable of the Saur equipment, and set up shop in Germantown as well, acting more or less as the successors of the younger Saur. They printed the 4th american edition of the Ausbund in 1785. That is the book which is the subject of this auction. The Billmeyer / Leibert partnership continued for about three years until 1786, after which Billmeyer continued alone, and Leibert started a new printing business. This edition has all original leather covers and spine. Some chipping to the top & bottom of the spine. Front cover barely attached. Missing the 2 original straps that held the book closed. Some very old moisture stains can be seen on some of the pages. Otherwise, the book is in really good/stable condition with the binding tight and not falling apart!! This is a very nice example of this edition. No reserve price, because reserves are for cowards. Don't miss this opportunity to own a great piece of Pennsylvania Dutsch / Deutsch anabaptist history.
