Description: "Queen-Hith Ward and Vintry Ward with their Divisions into Parishes according to a New Survey." A map of part of the City of London on the north bank of the Thames, now adjoining Southwark Bridge. The map shows Queen-Hith dock which still exists though silted up long ago. It also shows the sites of two important Livery Companies, the Vintners, and the Painter Stainers. Sadly, much of the area was bombed during the Blitz, so we have lost the delightfully named 'Labour in Vain Yard.' The map is by Benjamin Cole, and dated in the dedication title at the bottom 1755. It is taken from William Maitland's "History of London..." which was first published in 1739, this from the revised 1756 edition or later. It is a genuine antique map on laid paper. John Strype, in his 1720 Survey of London describes Queen-Hithe dock as 'A great reception for western barges, lighters, and boats, which brings a considerable resort and trade to the place.' He describes a meal market on the site, where such commodities could be stored. He also mentions a 'good store of publick houses' in the vicinity. With its title cartouche, Arms of Sir Crispin Gascoigne and Marsh Dickinson (Aldermen of the Wards), and vignette of St Michael's Church (a Wren church demolished in 1876), all attractively handcoloured, this is an attractive Georgian map of a central part of London that would frame up nicely. I am listing other maps from this City survey on ebay. Please see my other items. Size: the mount measures approx. 46cms x 34cms.Condition: The paper is browned with age. But with its attractive later handcolouring it would frame up nicely as it is. Please study my photographs. Postage: £5.00 within the UK. £12.00 to Europe, £18.00 to USA etc.I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
