General information about Dutch Duits: Duit is the name of a small bargaining chip of the Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. The name comes from the Old Norse word "thveit", meaning a small coin (literally "cut off a piece"). Duit appeared at the beginning of the 17th century, was equal to 2 pennings and was 1/8 of a stuver or 1/160 of a Dutch guilder. Coins were minted from copper, very rarely from silver and gold.
